A little tidbit that wasn’t adequately addressed in the debates: the newly elected President of the United States will likely appoint 2 or even 3 justices to the Supreme Court - and if you’re foggy about SCOTUS, remember that they set precedent for the laws of the land. So when you VOTE TODAY (because choosing not to is WILDLY IRRESPONSIBLE) realize that your decision will affect the legal environment of this country for far longer than 4 years…HAPPY ELECTION DAY!!

Food Day report analyzes how minimum wage hike would impact consumers, workers:

Berkeley — A new report released today (Wednesday, Oct. 24) in observation of national Food Day 2012 says that a proposal pending in U.S. Congress to raise the minimum wage would increase retail food prices for American consumers by at most 10 cents a day, while helping nearly 8 million food workers and 21 million workers in other industries.

The report from the recently established Food Labor Research Center, based at the University of California, Berkeley’s Center for Labor Research and Education, along with the Food Chain Workers Alliance and the Restaurant Opportunities Centers (ROC United) looks at the proposed “Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2012.” The act would represent the first increase in the non-tipped minimum wage in five years and the first in 21 years for tipped workers, who because they make $30 or more in tips a month, can be paid less than other workers.

“Food workers are some of the lowest-paid workers in America, and they face much higher levels of food insecurity than the rest of the U.S. workforce,” said Saru Jayaraman, director of the Food Labor Research Center. “Our report shows that raising the minimum wage would help them put food on the table while barely, if at all, impacting everyone else’s ability to put food on their tables, too.”

Earlier today, CNN published an article about a “study” that showed that hormones drive voter behavior in women. This the kind of pseudo-science trash that perpetuates the myth that people with uteruses are incompetent, irrational, and worth dismissing for at least one week per month, and that every time a vagina is penetrated it forms an intense emotional bond is formed because SCIENCE.

And for once, the majority of commenters agreed. After hundreds of outraged comments, CNN had this message. Of course, while it’s great the article has been taken down, it seems absurd that the piece wasn’t vetted for meeting CNN’s “standards” in the first damn place.

“That women are joining in the ongoing disassembling of my appearance is salient. Patriarchy is not men. Patriarchy is a system in which both women and men participate. It privileges, inter alia, the interests of boys and men over the bodily integrity, autonomy, and dignity of girls and women. It is subtle, insidious, and never more dangerous than when women passionately deny that they themselves are engaging in it. This abnormal obsession with women’s faces and bodies has become so normal that we (I include myself at times—I absolutely fall for it still) have internalized patriarchy almost seamlessly. We are unable at times to identify ourselves as our own denigrating abusers, or as abusing other girls and women.”

Virginia Ultrasound Bill: Republican Lawmaker Calls Abortion "Lifestyle Convenience":

Democrats have criticized Gilbert’s floor statement, and Englin said that the statement is in line with previous Republican comments on the issue. He noted he had a conversation with one GOP lawmaker regarding his amendment where the lawmaker had told him that women had already made the decision to be “vaginally penetrated when they got pregnant.”
